HEBI Robotics, a developer of modular robotic hardware and software, has received a NASA Small Business Innovation Research Phase I contract to advance miniaturized, high-torque-density actuators for SmallSats and other space-constrained systems. Awarded through the NASA SBIR Ignite initiative, the contract will support research into compact modular actuators ruggedized for challenging operating environments. HEBI said NASA is interested in the technology for CubeSats and other applications where limited available space can restrict the use of conventional robotic manipulation hardware.

The official project proposal calls for a six-month feasibility study examining actuator form factors, motor and gearbox combinations and bill-of-material costs at annual production volumes of 100, 1,000 and 10,000 units. The work is expected to produce an initial proof-of-concept design and prototype of the miniaturized actuator assembly. HEBI expects the Phase I project to continue through December 2026. The research is intended to bridge the gap between inexpensive, low-performance hobby servos and costly custom-designed space robotics systems.

“With space becoming increasingly commercialized, there is real demand for affordable, versatile, and scalable mass-production of robotic systems that can function in difficult environments,” said Andrew Willig, Director of Hardware at HEBI Robotics. “We’re looking to bring the price point down on rugged hardware without compromising the reliability that a critical industry such as aerospace relies on.”

The project begins at Technology Readiness Level 2 and is expected to reach TRL 3. Its broader objective is to enable the scalable production of robotic actuation systems for manufacturing and assembly tasks in challenging terrestrial and space environments.

“NASA has used our hardware in the past and it is exciting to be able to work on projects like this that make it possible for America to do more in space,” Willig said.

HEBI expects the work to support applications beyond SmallSats and space robotics. The NASA project abstract identifies agriculture, confined-space inspection and academia among the potential commercial applications for the technology.

“Space is difficult, but the lessons apply here on earth as well. Making systems that are easy to use and rugged means these actuators are of interest not just to NASA but to anyone looking for modular actuation hardware they can deploy in rough and dangerous environments in the field.”

NASA selected 15 small businesses for its 2025 SBIR Ignite Phase I awards, with each company eligible to receive up to $150,000 for early-stage technology development. The commercialization-focused initiative supports technologies addressing NASA requirements while offering potential applications in private-sector markets.
